They reflect the development of the monetary system of the Russian Empire, the reigns of the tsars, and the political and economic conditions of that period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Royal coins (gold, silver, copper) usually feature the image of the tsar, the coat of arms, or the mint mark. Depending on each tsar\u2019s reign, the type, weight, and metal composition of the coins changed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The kopek \u2013 the main small currency unit used since the 16th century \u2013 gets its name from the depiction of a mounted cavalryman with a spear. Later, copper kopeks became widespread.
